Tutoring in higher education – how does it support students and develop their potential?

Tutoring is an increasingly popular form of student development support at universities. Unlike classic mentoring, tutoring focuses on one-on-one work – the tutor accompanies the student (tutee) in the development process, helping to discover strengths, discover motivation within themselves and overcome academic and personal difficulties.

Mentiway vs. tutoring – what is it all about?

At Mentiway, we support universities in implementing and running modern tutoring programs – from strategy, to matching tutor-tutee pairs, to monitoring and reporting progress. How does it work in practice? Below you’ll find a short report on what a pilot tutoring program at Lodz University of Technology that we implemented together with the Lodz Learning Center looked like.

What is tutoring?

Tutoring is a developmental relationship that is based on regular meetings and a one-on-one approach. The role of the tutor is not to impart knowledge, but to support the tutee in setting goals, making decisions, solving problems and developing soft skills and self-awareness.

Tutoring programs are increasingly appearing at universities. This is in response to the need for individualized education and greater psychosocial support for students.

What are the benefits of tutoring for students?

Data collected in the Mentiway pilot program at the Technical University of Lodz shows that tutoring has real, noticeable effects. The benefits most often indicated by students are:

  • Increase in motivation and commitment to learning – 81.82%
  • Receive useful tools for self-work – 72.73%.
  • Regularly received support – 63.64%.
  • Development of effective communication skills – 63.64%.
  • Development of selected skills and competencies – 63.64%.

In addition, in conversations with students and tutors, effects such as:

  • protection against dropout, that is, premature termination of studies,
  • Assistance to projects at risk of failure,
  • empowerment – strengthening self-confidence,
  • Cope with stress and difficulties at university,
  • Support in personal development, career planning and building on your strengths.

Tutoring at Lodz University of Technology – Mentiway pilot program

In the 2024/2025 academic year, Lodz University of Technology, in cooperation with Mentiway, launched a pilot tutoring program with dozens of students and tutors from various departments.

The entire program was conducted using the Mentiway application, which:

  • Improves the selection of tutoring pairs,
  • allows for easy scheduling and documentation of meetings,
  • enables ongoing monitoring of program progress and collection of feedback data.

The program was very highly rated by participants – 100% positive responses, and the average satisfaction level was as high as 9.2/10.

Tutoring and Mentiway – together into the future

As of October 2025, the target edition of the tutoring program at the Technical University of Lodz will start – this time on a larger scale. We are proud that Mentiway will once again support the university in this process.
