Mentoring and employee well-being: how a mentoring program enhances well-being in the workplace

Well-being of employees – broadly defined as their mental, emotional and professional comfort – has become one of the key challenges of modern organizations. Companies are increasingly introducing measures to support mental health, but a still underestimated yet extremely effective method of influencing well-being is mentoring.

In a previous blog post, I wrote about how mentoring supports employee mental health – highlighting aspects such as stress reduction, improved self-esteem and relationship building.

In this article, we will take a broader look: how a mentoring program realistically affects well-being of employees, and therefore not only mental health, but also daily working conditions, sense of meaning, development and functioning in the organization.

Why does mentoring naturally support well-being?

Mentoring is a process whose foundation is relationship. It is one-on-one contact that creates space for conversation, reflection, support and development. The very presence of such a relationship has a protective function – it gives a sense that “I’m not alone with this.”

As a result, mentoring affects many key components of well-being:

1. A sense of being noticed and appreciated

We know from the studies cited in the previous article that appreciation for one’s work and support from co-workers and superiors are among the most important factors protecting mental health.

Mentoring systematizes this process: regular meetings ensure that the employee receives not only feedback, but also confirmation of his efforts and progress.

2 Strengthen the sense of empowerment and competence

Improved job performance – as described in research on the effects of mentoring – directly translates into improved well-being and greater motivation.
A well-run mentoring process helps Mentee develop specific skills, solve professional dilemmas and increase self-confidence.

3. Emotional support in daily challenges

Every employee experiences stress, difficult relationships, time pressure or uncertainty. A mentor provides an opportunity to work through these topics in a safe space.
The research cited in the previous text showed that the very fact of regular contact and conversation with another person reduces stress levels and feelings of loneliness.

4. New perspective and broadening of thinking

Well-being of employees also depends on whether they have a sense of development and influence over their own career path. A mentor helps to look at the bigger picture – notice opportunities, options for development, and realistically plan next steps.

This gives the employee not only support in the here and now, but also a long-term vision for his or her career.

Mentoring and working conditions: a real improvement in the employee experience

The introduction of well-being programs is often associated with benefits: sports cards or training. Meanwhile, mentoring affects the core of the work experience, which is how an employee functions on a daily basis.

1. Greater transparency and psychological safety

Employees who know they can talk openly with a Mentor about their difficulties are less likely to feel anxious about evaluation, mistakes or change.

2. Better functioning teams

Mentoring increases interpersonal and communication skills – not only of the Mentee, but also of the Mentors, as proven in studies including mentoring programs in the uniformed services.

The result? Less tension in the teams, better cooperation and a more supportive atmosphere.

3. Reduce the negative effects of stress

As my earlier article shows, stress and job burnout affect a huge proportion of employees – up to 2/3 report symptoms of burnout.

Mentoring allows you to react early to signs of overload before they develop into more serious problems.

4. Building lasting professional relationships

Relationships are one of the most important predictors of well-being – a sense of belonging is based on them. Mentoring becomes a strong starting point for creating a support network within a company.

How does mentoring affect the well-being of the Mentor?

As I mentioned above, well-being in a company is not only about those who receive support, but also about those who give it – this is worth emphasizing, as very often mentoring is associated only as a support process for mentees.

In a previous article, I cited research showing that Mentors have lower stress levels and a greater sense of purpose in their daily work.

Why?

  • Have the satisfaction of having a real impact on the development of others,
  • themselves develop interpersonal skills,
  • gain a fresh perspective from Mentee,
  • feel a greater value of their role in the organization.

This effect is important because by supporting Mentors, the company strengthens the overall well-being of its most experienced employees – often leaders or role models.

Mentoring as part of the company’s well-being strategy

Companies introducing mentoring programs gain a tool that works on several levels simultaneously:

  • educational – competence development,
  • emotional – support and stress reduction,
  • relational – building ties and security,
  • organizational – increasing motivation and commitment,
  • strategic – reducing turnover and absenteeism.

Importantly, as the research cited earlier shows, some companies are deliberately introducing mentoring precisely as a tool to improve employee well-being – and this is a trend that will grow.

Summary: Mentoring as the foundation of a healthy organization

Well-being of employees is not an add-on, but the foundation of an effective and healthy organization. Mentoring – due to its relational, systematic and individual nature – influences this well-being in a natural, profound and long-lasting way.

From reducing stress, building confidence and competence, to strengthening relationships and detecting early signs of overload, mentoring provides elements that no single benefit can provide.
