Women Forward: Mentoring for Women in Science
The Women Forward: Mentoring for Women in Science program by Alumniportal Deutschland is designed to specifically promote and network women in science. It targets aspiring female scientists who wish to advance their careers and benefit from the experience of established mentors.
Program Overview
In 2024, the program included three virtual networking meetings:

- July
- September
These meetings offered participants additional space for mutual exchange. For 2025, a new call for applications for the program within the Humboldt Network is planned, to be announced in Humboldt Life in early 2025. This indicates an annual recurrence of the program, ensuring continuous support for women in science.
Future Improvements
The online meetings also provide space for ideas on how the mentoring program can be further improved in the future. For example, one participant expressed a desire for:
- Additional networking among mentees in their specific scientific area for content-related exchange.
This demonstrates that the program is responsive to the needs of its participants and evolves.
Mentors
Mentors are experienced female scientists and experts from various fields who share their knowledge and networks. Examples include:
- Hermela Lakew, an economist and PhD candidate focusing on food insecurity.
- Elsa Varela, a forestry scientist specializing in socio-ecological sustainability.
- Daniela Becker, Content and Community Manager at Alumniportal Deutschland, who brings extensive experience in international environments.
This diversity of mentors ensures broad support and different perspectives for mentees.
