Cross-Border Mentoring Program: careerSTEPS
The cross-border mentoring program careerSTEPS of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, launched in cooperation with the German partner university OTH Amberg-Weiden within the career4PROF project, is a unique initiative aimed at motivating young people towards a scientific career.
The program responds to the long-term decline in interest in doctoral studies and academic careers in both technical and non-technical fields. It is specifically designed for Master's students or those interested in doctoral studies and a scientific career.
Main Characteristics and Program Flow
- Cross-Border Tandems: The program is based on creating cross-border mentor-mentee pairs. In the pilot run, 10 applications from mentees from Bavaria were received, for whom 10 mentors from across the University of West Bohemia were found, professionally matching the mentee's profile.
- Tailored Mentoring Agreement: Each pair signs a mentoring agreement that is customized to the specific wishes and needs of the mentee and their mentor. This ensures the flexibility and relevance of the mentoring relationship.
- Duration and Meeting Format: The mentoring program runs from November 2023 to July 2024. During this time, pairs meet on scheduled dates for online meetings, in person at the University of West Bohemia or at the partner OTH Amberg-Weiden. They can also jointly participate in other professional activities, such as workshops, conferences, meetings with doctoral students from the University of West Bohemia, or visits to laboratories and companies.
Example of Good Practice
The University of West Bohemia was recognized at the Mentoring Forum 2024 conference for the results of the pilot version of the program and was designated as an example of good practice in cross-border mentoring.
Future Plans
The pilot phase of the program will conclude with an evaluation in the summer months, and new mentees and mentors are expected to be welcomed for the next year of the cross-border program in the autumn.
The careerSTEPS program is an important tool for strengthening the internationalization of the University of West Bohemia and for supporting young scientists in their career development.
