Roma Mentoring Program
Roma Mentoring is a service implemented by the non-profit organization Rubikon Centrum (formerly the Association for Probation and Mediation in Justice, o.s.) in close cooperation with the Probation and Mediation Service of the Czech Republic (PMS ČR). The program aims to help Roma clients of the PMS ČR overcome obstacles that prevent them from successfully serving alternative sentences or measures.
Main Aspects and Benefits of the Program
- Fieldwork: Trained Roma mentors seek out and contact clients directly in the field. They provide clear explanations of the terms of the sentence and the possible consequences of non-compliance.
- Support in Serving the Sentence: Mentors support clients in serving alternative sentences, in communicating with authorities, and connect them with other necessary services.
- Recidivism Prevention: The program is based on the principle that an alternative sentence served in freedom allows convicted individuals to maintain relationships with family and social surroundings, thereby giving them a chance to change their lives and not return to criminal activity.
- Long-term Cooperation: Experience shows that with increasing length of cooperation with a mentor, the chances of success increase. The program is particularly effective for clients with long-term problematic compliance with alternative sentences.
