Mentor Yng Program

In addition to the main program, there is Mentor Yng, a similar initiative for young individuals aged 13 to 20 who have brain and spinal cord injuries. Participants receive age-appropriate training and then take on special responsibilities to support children and youth in the foundation's projects or relevant external projects.

The foundation believes that age matching between mentors and participants can lead to better understanding and communication, thereby making a crucial difference.

Focus of the Program

The Sunnaas Foundation's mentoring program emphasizes self-development and recognizing one's own strengths. Research indicates that:

  • Sharing experiences, support, and guidance from peers (mentors) boosts self-confidence.
  • Encouragement from mentors promotes greater participation in work, education, and leisure activities.

In this program, mentors are individuals who themselves live with an injury or illness. A mentor, with their valuable experiential knowledge, can connect with individuals in a different way than healthcare professionals, making them a vital supplement to medical rehabilitation.

Addressing Rehabilitation Gaps

The program addresses a significant gap in rehabilitation. While Norway excels in life-saving treatment and specialized hospital rehabilitation, the transition from hospital to everyday life can be challenging. Many experience:

  • Less follow-up and support during this transition than they actually need.

The program believes that everyone needs a role model – someone who can offer advice, support, and guidance when the path feels steep, and someone who truly understands their situation.

Program Structure

The program combines theory, practical exercises, and the exchange of experiences as tools to develop mentoring skills. The Sunnaas Foundation utilizes both internal and external resources in:

  • Guidance and leadership
  • Crisis management and preparedness
  • Psychology and communication
  • Value-based leadership and conflict management

During the practical period, participants apply their knowledge in the foundation's projects while developing as leaders and role models. The program serves not only to professionalize the mentor role but also as a pathway back to working life, organizational involvement, and further education.

Goals of the Program

The program has two main goals:

  • To empower individuals with reduced functional ability to develop their competence and realize their potential through a specially adapted educational program.
  • To build future mentors by educating resources who can contribute experience-based knowledge in both the foundation's own projects and relevant external projects.
