Innovation Norway's Mentoring Service
Innovation Norway's mentoring service, nationally administered by Connect Vest since 2020, offers 30 hours of one-on-one conversations between a mentor and the daily leader of an innovative startup company. The mentor acts as a discussion partner, providing specialized expertise and experience, offering advice, and challenging the mentee with critical questions.
Primary Goals
The primary goal is to give the mentee access to competence and networks they would not otherwise have. It is emphasized that:
- The mentor is not expected to perform tasks for the company.
- A Menon report from autumn 2018 indicated that mentoring collaborations positively impact economic growth and increase the likelihood of business survival.
Eligibility Criteria
The scheme is available to daily leaders in innovative companies that are less than five years old. Note that:
- One cannot apply specifically for a mentor from Innovation Norway.
- It is recommended to discuss the possibility of a mentor grant in combination with financing with their case officer.
Finding the Right Mentor
Connect Vest has extensive experience in finding the right mentor for entrepreneurs. They conduct a thorough needs assessment with the founder to determine the necessary competence and experience for the mentor. They then present two candidates. The process includes:
- Utilizing a large network and a solid mentor database.
- Looking outside their network as needed.
Good chemistry is a vital factor, and an informal meeting between the mentor candidate and the founder is always recommended before signing the contract.
Compensation and Restrictions
A mentor assignment of 30 hours is compensated with NOK 31,500 excluding VAT, with invoicing occurring after all hours are completed and a short report is finalized. Additionally:
- Individuals who are already on the startup company's board, an investor in the company, or otherwise already hired by the company cannot take on a mentor role.
- Connect Vest or one of its partners must approve the mentor in each individual case.
