Mentoring Scheme Overview
The Mentoring Scheme at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Bergen (UiB) was initiated by students themselves in 2020. The program's main goal is to ensure lasting social and academic integration for new students.
Program Coordination
Lukas Hansen Bjerkestrand coordinates the program, which employs around 30 mentors annually. Each mentor follows up with a group of 10 students, and the groups are divided by age.
Focus Areas
The program focuses on various important topics, including:
- Study techniques
- Exam mastery
- Campus opportunities
- Career and job opportunities
Mentor Qualifications
Mentors are advanced students in the same study program, and they receive training in:
- Role understanding
- Group leadership
- Administrative knowledge
They are available both during and outside meetings, serving as an important point of contact for their group.
Program Impact
The program has proven to provide students with a better structure for their study life and helps reduce uncertainty, especially in the first semester. The goal is for students to feel more secure and integrated into student life.
Partnerships and Adaptability
Sammen and Uniped are partners who contribute to training the mentors. During the pandemic, the program demonstrated creativity by finding alternative solutions for social contact, such as outdoor activity days, to ensure students could still connect.
Mentor Experience
Mentors value the flexibility and opportunity for self-development. There is high participation and low dropout among younger students, which underscores the program's relevance and success.
