Student to Student Team – Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca
The "Student to Student Team" mentoring program at Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca was launched to effectively support first-year students in integrating into the university community during their initial year of studies. The university's primary goal is to build an authentic student community where individuals:
- Understand each other
- Respect one another
- Support each other
This program emphasizes being present for one another in both good times and challenging situations. Additionally, it aims to help freshmen:
- Familiarize themselves with all aspects of student life
- Transition easily to a new academic and social environment
- Cope with inherent challenges
Structure and Methodology
Participation in the mentoring program is free of charge. The activities within the program are organized by mentors, who are older UBB students trained at the "Student to Student Team" Summer School. This summer school provides participants with the opportunity to develop the competencies and skills needed to be effective mentors.
Older students act as guides, offering advice, guidance, and support to freshmen. By participating in meetings organized by the project mentors throughout their first year, freshmen are:
- Guided in familiarizing themselves with the institution
- Introduced to courses and professors
- Connected with colleagues
- Acquainted with the city and UBB student life
After a pandemic academic year, UBB aimed to welcome its freshmen face-to-face in Cluj, emphasizing the importance of direct interaction in the integration process.
Impact
The program contributes to creating a favorable learning and development environment, reducing the stress and uncertainty associated with the transition to university life. Through the support provided by older peers, freshmen:
- Develop self-confidence
- Improve their adaptation skills
- Build valuable social networks
This initiative not only facilitates academic success but also promotes a strong sense of belonging and community among UBB students.
