RWTH Aachen University Mentoring Program

RWTH Aachen University offers an individual and comprehensive mentoring system aimed at systematically advising and accompanying students through one-on-one discussions throughout their entire studies. This voluntary and free service helps to identify individual needs, problems, and potentials early on and define solution-oriented steps.

The Aachener Mentoring Modell was introduced in 2011 and has continued since 2021 with established standards and implementation tools. It is aimed at all students at RWTH Aachen and covers topics such as:

  • Study organization
  • Motivation
  • Time management
  • Study doubts
  • Personal crises
  • Career perspectives

Students can schedule as many confidential conversations as they need. Mentors are specially trained in areas such as:

  • Conflict management
  • Intercultural competence

They also refer students to internal or external counseling services if necessary. Anonymized feedback from mentees is used to improve study conditions.

Junior meets Senior Mentoring Program

The "Junior meets Senior" Mentoring Program connects international doctoral students (Juniors) with experienced researcher alumni (Seniors) of RWTH. The annual program begins with a digital kick-off event where potential mentoring tandems are formed.

The goal is to:

  • Support Juniors in their career development
  • Introduce them to the formal and informal structures of German organizations
  • Enable them to build a network

Juniors benefit from the Seniors' experiences and receive support with current challenges. Seniors, in turn, gain new university contacts, current insights into research topics, and can pass on their knowledge.

Mentors are researcher alumni, while mentees are international doctoral students at RWTH. This program is an excellent example of utilizing alumni networks to promote young scientists and integrate international talent.
