Mentoring Program for Economically Disadvantaged Students

The Mentoring Program for Economically Disadvantaged Students, under the Charles University Carolina Centre, is a key initiative aimed at supporting students and prospective students who are in challenging socio-economic situations. This program operates on the principle of peer mentoring, where more experienced students (mentors) provide support and share their academic and life experiences with younger students or applicants (mentees).

The program is designed to help mentees overcome specific challenges associated with transitioning to university and navigating their studies, including:

  • Understanding academic requirements
  • Effective learning
  • Timetable planning
  • Managing entrance exams

Key Aspects and Mentoring Topics

  • Academic Orientation: Mentors assist with understanding how studies function, navigating the faculty, registering for courses and exams, and effective study strategies.
  • Language Support: For students whose native language is not Czech, assistance is available with practicing Czech and reviewing texts.
  • Personal and Socio-Economic Support: The program targets students who have lower economic support, are first-generation university students, face academic difficulties, are student-parents, or are recent arrivals from Ukraine. The goal is to reduce stress and improve academic performance.
  • Meeting Flexibility: Mentoring typically takes place through regular in-person meetings (approximately once a week for an hour), but it is also possible to have a one-time consultation or conduct the entire process online, depending on individual agreement.

The mentoring service is completely free for mentees, removing a financial barrier for participants. Mentors are financially compensated for their work, which motivates more experienced students to get involved. Feedback from participants is very positive, highlighting reduced stress and improved orientation in their studies.

The program is an important tool for promoting equal opportunities and an inclusive environment at Charles University. For those interested in mentoring, the contact person is Bc. Tereza Smejkalová, who coordinates mentoring and socio-economic counseling.
