Biology Centre CAS Mentoring Program

The Biology Centre CAS Mentoring Program is designed to accelerate and enhance the career development of young scientific staff, specifically Ph.D. students and postdocs. The program emphasizes sharing information, advice, and support from more experienced mentors, enabling nascent scientists to kickstart their careers and succeed in both academic and professional life more quickly.

The program facilitates contact with mentors from the Biology Centre or other relevant institutions in the Czech Republic or abroad, thereby broadening the mentees' horizons and expanding their network of contacts.

Key Benefits and Program Flow

For Mentees:

  • Gaining practical experience
  • Skill development
  • Assistance with setting and achieving goals
  • Motivation
  • Faster achievement of successes
  • Unbiased feedback
  • Establishing new valuable contacts

The program is highly individualized and serves to kickstart a scientific career and provide orientation within the academic environment.

For Mentors:

  • Expanding their existing contacts
  • Opportunity to contribute to the development of emerging scientists
  • Gaining a new perspective on their work
  • Improving communication skills

The program begins with an introductory workshop where mentees' goals are identified and analyzed. This is followed by a mentor-finding phase, where the mentee can either find a mentor independently or receive active assistance from the Biology Centre.

Mentoring meetings are flexible, and their frequency (in-person meetings, emails, phone calls) is determined by mutual agreement. For international mentors, travel costs associated with visiting the mentor are covered by the ABERA project, facilitating international collaboration. The program concludes with a final meeting and an evaluation of its benefits.

The program duration varies; in the past, it has lasted from 6 to 10 months, but generally, it can extend throughout the mentee's employment period. The success of the program depends on the mentee's proactive approach and initiative.

Mentoring at the Biology Centre is considered a standard part of the ongoing professional development for young scientists, reflecting Western trends where mentoring is already common in primary and secondary schools.
