Lata - Peer Mentoring Program

The Lata - Peer Mentoring Program is an initiative of the Lata organization, which since 1994 has been the first in the Czech Republic to focus on peer mentoring for young people aged 12 to 26. The program connects clients (young people) with trained volunteers (peer mentors) who are close in age and willing to help. Since its inception, the program has worked with 900 volunteers and helped a thousand young people.

Main Goals and Benefits of the Program

  • Problem Solving: The program helps young people struggling with:
    • Relationship problems with peers and parents
    • Self-perception issues
    • Missing contacts and role models
    • Tendencies towards risky behavior (e.g., experimenting with addictive substances, self-harm, suicidal tendencies)
  • Individual Support: Mentoring takes place in the form of regular meetings, where the mentor provides support, listens, and helps the mentee find solutions to their problems. The intensity and length of meetings are adapted to individual needs.
  • Skill Development: The program helps young people develop social and emotional skills, strengthen self-confidence, and gain new perspectives.
  • Long-Term Impact: The program boasts a long history and proven effectiveness, evidenced by the fact that the total hours of meetings between pairs amount to 6 years of continuous sessions.
  • Volunteer Activity: Mentors are trained volunteers who actively participate in helping young people.

The Lata program is an important tool for preventing risky behavior and supporting the healthy development of adolescents in the Czech Republic.
