Mentoring Programme – UNE – The University of New Europe

The mentoring program offered by The University of New Europe (UNE), a Stichting UNE Foundation initiative based in Amsterdam, is a unique program that responds to geopolitical crises. Its main objective is to provide support to students, scholars, and cultural workers who have been affected by the war in Ukraine or are at risk in other East-Central, Eastern European, and Central-Asian countries.

History and Methodology

The mentoring program is currently run as a stand-alone UNE project for safety reasons. In 2025, the UNE mentoring team will be supported by the Dutch Foundation for Media & Democracy. The program is facilitated by a team of assistants and volunteers who are responsible for:

  • Creating matches between international scholars and professionals (mentors)
  • Connecting at-risk students, scholars, and cultural workers (mentees)

Although an introductory video mentions cooperation with other organizations, the program operates autonomously to ensure the safety of participants.

Impact

The article does not explicitly detail the impact of the mentoring program in terms of specific outcomes or achievements. However, its purpose suggests a significant impact on the intellectual and professional continuity of displaced or at-risk individuals, providing an international support network that leverages the global expertise of mentors. This contributes to the preservation of human capital and cultural heritage during times of conflict and instability.
