Charles University Mentoring Program for Young Scientific Workers
The Charles University Mentoring Program for Young Scientific Workers represents an innovative form of career development support for early-career scientific staff across all faculties of Charles University. The program aims to facilitate the smooth career progression of young scientists, helping them effectively overcome obstacles and resolve dilemmas related to their professional direction.
The program is designed to be flexible, allowing its content to be tailored to the individual needs and expectations of each mentoring pair. The pilot cycle of the program runs until December 2025, with another year planned for the next academic year, demonstrating Charles University's long-term vision and commitment to supporting its scientific talents. During the pilot cycle, twenty mentor-mentee pairs are supported, participating in approximately five meetings per year, focused on specific career goals and the development of professional skills.
Key Objectives and Benefits of the Program
- Providing Tools for Smooth Career Development: The program helps young scientists identify and achieve preferred career goals, gain informal information, and access new networks (networking). It supports informed decisions in strengthening competencies and balancing personal and professional life.
- Promoting Equal Opportunities: Emphasis is placed on supporting women in science and research, with the aim of reducing gender segregation in middle and senior university management positions. This aspect contributes to cultural and institutional change at Charles University.
- Mutual Enrichment: Mentors have a unique opportunity to develop their mentoring skills, contribute to fostering a supportive environment, and be inspired by new perspectives from the younger generation of scientists. For the university, the program introduces new career development practices through sharing experiences from experienced colleagues within Charles University and other institutions.
The program is funded by the European Union, highlighting its significance and international context. Participants are encouraged to actively engage, and it is expected that inspiring stories and experiences will emerge from the program, enriching the entire scientific community.
For future interested individuals, it is recommended to follow current information on the Postdoctoral Platform website and Charles University's social media channels. Applications for mentees were closed in the pilot cycle, with the possibility of submitting further applications in autumn 2025. The call for mentors is continuously open. The program is administered by the Department for Science and Research, Charles University Rectorate.
