Nattergalen Mentoring Program
Nattergalen is an international mentoring program operated at NTNU, where university students serve as mentors for children with minority backgrounds. The program aims to strengthen children's sense of security, self-esteem, and mastery in various social situations, as well as to contribute to a greater sense of safety both when alone and in relationships with others.
Target Group
Participating children are recruited from primary schools in Trondheim municipality and are aged 8 to 12 years. Mentors and mentees meet weekly from October to May, and can choose to meet in:
- Homes
- At the university
- During various leisure and cultural activities
Community Activities
Nattergalen also organizes joint activities for all participating children and mentors, which fosters community and networking.
Long-Term Goals
The long-term goals for Nattergalen are threefold:
- Strengthening Cultural Sensitivity: Enhance multicultural competence in child welfare by providing students with better knowledge and competence regarding children and youth from minority backgrounds and their families.
- Improving Language Skills: Contribute to more children and youth from minority backgrounds improving their Norwegian language skills, increasing their motivation for learning, strengthening their self-esteem, and experiencing more success.
- Educational Completion: Contribute to more children and youth from minority backgrounds completing high school and having the opportunity to pursue higher education.
Opportunities for Students
For students, Nattergalen represents a unique opportunity to gain extended practical experience early in their studies and to contribute to minority children feeling a sense of belonging in their new country. Participating students can take an exam in the course ISA1005 – Mentorskap i en flerkulturell kontekst for 7 ECTS credits.
Administration and Support
The program is administered and financially supported by the Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs (Bufdir) and Trondheim municipality.
