Well-being

Well-being is created through a conscious effort to maximize five factors that help a person feel fulfilled, in good spirits, and emotionally balanced.

These factors are:

  1. Positive emotions
  2. Effects
  3. Meaning
  4. Relationships
  5. Flow

This exercise can be used to:

  • Determine a mentee's internal resources and support them in recognizing mastery in a particular field.

The materials:

  • Paper
  • Post-it notes
  • Colored pens/markers
  • Virtual board (such as Miro or Mural) for remote work

Instructions:

Step 1

Encourage the mentee to identify their professional or personal goal. Ask the mentee to write down their goal.

Step 2

Ask the mentee to identify factors related to their chosen goal in each of the five categories. Encourage the mentee to generate as many factors as they can think of.

WELL-BEING

Positive emotions

  • What positive emotions do you want to feel while taking action?
  • What positive emotions do you want to feel after completing the action?
  • What precisely will these emotions be?

Effects

  • What will be the result?
  • What effects will you achieve?
  • What will you accomplish?
  • What specifically will be the result?

Meaning

  • What sense do you feel?
  • What values are you realizing?
  • What values support you?

Relationships

  • Who can be supportive of you?
  • From whom can you draw?
  • With whom can you share?

Flow (engagement)

  • What specifically makes you feel flow?
  • What influences your engagement?
  • What absorbs you most in this action?

Step 3

Encourage the mentee to reflect on the essential factors in each category. Mark each of these factors - the mentee can circle or highlight them in a different color if working on a virtual board.

Step 4

Ask the mentee to create a sentence based on the chosen factors from step 3. Make sure the sentence is:

  • Formulated positively (without negation!)
  • Clear
  • Understandable Ask the mentee to write down this sentence. Encourage the mentee to reflect on the sentence using the following questions:
  • Does this sentence have a positive connotation for you?
  • What message does this sentence convey?
  • Do you feel that this sentence meets all the criteria for well-being?
  • Does this sentence serve you?
  • How does it serve you?

Step 5

Encourage and support the mentee in practically identifying how they will implement the listed factors in each area. Ask the mentee to write down the material and intangible resources that will assist in achieving their goal.

Step 7

Based on the answers, create a new sentence with the mentee or reformulate the existing one, as you did in step 4.

Step 8

Summarize the exercise. You can use the following questions: What have you learned about yourself? What have you discovered? What do you plan to do with it? What specific actions will you take? When?
